International security is rarely increased by adding new rockets, no matter how defensive the names of the installations. Especially if the rockets are stationed on the border with Russia.
On Aug. 20 U.S. State Secretary Condoleezza Rice and Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski sealed the long-negotiated missile defense deal.

I never asked what Michael Phelps eats for breakfast. In fact, most days I don't even care what I eat for breakfast. In spite of that, two weeks ago, three different news networks (including CNN, which has taken to boasting "The Best Political Team on Television") made it its business to ensure I could memorize Phelps' daily small portion of porridge; three lettuce, tomato, and fried egg sandwiches with mayonnaise and butter on white bread; five-egg omelet; three slices of French toast; and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Miley Cyrus is America's favorite little jailbait and the music industry's rising Lolita. Her tweendom knows no boundaries. She's on TV, the radio and at the budding age of 15, been immortalized as a Barbie doll.
Needless to say, I'm not impressed. In fact, I've got a freshly-sharpened Ticonderoga on hand at all times, so when I hear her songs, I see how close I can get to my brain through my ear.

My economics professor gave a lecture about how Renaissance Europeans were "crazy for beaver." I was the only one who cracked up. I'm also the T.A.
Well, my professor walked into class today with a foot and a half of toilet paper stuck to her pants.

"I kissed a girl, and I liked it," so goes "I Kissed a Girl," the lyrical summer smash by Katy Perry, pop star and daughter of traveling ministers. As the words slowly imprint themselves on our memories forever and winter leaves the summer hits behind, do the societal implications imprint as well? In terms of sex and the Smithie, how does a pop song both market and misconstrue what kissing girls is all about?
The first time I heard "I Kissed a Girl," was - surprise - at Smith.

Diamond to the guy at the OMAC who checked the IDs of all 2,000 students going to the activities fair. We know those 52 extra freshmen were hard to handle.

The professor-student relationship is probably one of the most important connections you will ever make as a college student. Though the University of Rhode Island is no doubt a large institution, it is still possible to forge crucial relationships between students and faculty within each department.

Instead of media pundits blowing a bunch of hot air about Barack Obama's former pastor, or simply calling him "the change candidate", there should be a real discussion and examination of who he has picked as his foreign policy advisers. These choices will have far more of an impact on our country than which church Obama attended or where he stands on the various partisan wedge issues.

Across campus, students are feeling the effects of a housing crunch that has left first-years detatched from their units, stowed in lounges, and dropped into kitchens. Because the University rightly does not place freshmen in triples or quads, there is a trickle-down effect that also wipes out housing for upperclassmen.

Thumbs Up The Olympics - From the opening ceremony to Phelpsmania to the show-stopping Usain Bolt, this Olympics featured high drama throughout. Questions about China's human rights record, the ages of its gymnasts, and the "cuteness" of the girl at the opening ceremony notwithstanding, this was one of the best Olympics ever.

The Issue: Alcohol violations now carry steep fines
What we think: "Clarity" does not beget fairness
Students setting foot on campus last weekend had a few things to look forward to: new roommates, new classes, and new alcohol and drug sanctions set in place by the Office of the Dean for Student Development (ODSD). While many of the policies are supposedly not "new" themselves, but "clearer" versions of what existed, the fact remains that there are now minimum, mandatory punishments - many of which include hefty fines for violators.

09/04/08 - College means a variety of different things to different students. For some of you, the University of Rhode Island is now your home. Some students can't imagine living without Butterfield Dining Hall in the morning with its heavenly Belgian waffles, impromptu Frisbee on the Quadrangle, or that professor that, within the duration of just one class, inspired you to take on the world in a new light.

I saw my first Good Ole Tom commercial of the year tonight. Now my return to school is official.
How's this for witty and thoughtful? Students run their showers and faucets 'til we get trays back, then the wasted water will actually stop.
It's not the lack of trays in the dining halls that has me concerned; it's the lack of sleds for when it starts to snow.

The closing of the 2008 Democratic National Convention leaves an awful taste in my mouth, a lingering sense of yet another opportunity squandered. With Barack Obama's selection of Joseph R. Biden Jr., the senior senator from Delaware, as his Vice-Presidential candidate, the Democratic Party has once again shown its willingness to sell out actual change for perceived change.

Days of waking up to a dark room that feels like a refrigerator, and long nights of studying like mad are approaching. What can you do to make this year different, better? First: to learn, your basic needs must be met. You can't study without being reasonably comfortable, and most of us need some sort of desk to do it.
