With first year elections for the Sloan Senate and the Sloan Activities Board right around the corner, Fifteen spoke with the leadership of both groups to provide students with a deeper description of each group's roles.
Senate Executive Committee Member, Laura Graham
Why are the Senate and the Activities Board different from other club roles?
Unlike clubs, we represent all Sloan MBA's in our decisions and actions. This is why all students have a vote in the election.
What are you responsible for?
The Senate represents the interests of the student body to the administration. The Senate committees (e.g. academics, facilities, CDO) take responsibility for spearheading key issues pertinent to their committees, while the whole Senate works together on other initiatives like the Charity Auction on December 1 and the Sloan Service Spectacular in the spring.
What is "a day in the life" like?
The Senate committees initiate their own agendas and outline the issues that they want to work on. For example, the Academics committee works with the administration on initiating improvements to Sloan classes. The Senate meets twice a month to get committee updates and work on larger issues as a group.
Why did you join?
I ran for the Senate because I love to be at the center of the action and because I am committed to Sloan. Being a Senator also offered me the opportunity to work with a huge variety of people (first years from other Oceans, second years, faculty and administration) on important issues.
What is the best part of the position?
The best part of the position is that I get to work with a fantastic group of students that are committed to making Sloan better a better school for all of us.
Senate key dates:
Candidate statements due: Friday, Oct 14
Elections begin: Monday, Oct 17
Elections end: Friday, Oct 21
Activities Board Co-President, Peer Casillo
Why are the Senate and the Activities Board different from other club roles?
Since we organize events for the entire community, we work cooperatively with all different campus groups- from the Student Affairs and Alumni offices to a variety of different clubs and student groups.
What are you responsible for?
The Activities Board plays a part in almost all of the social events on campus like C-Functions, the Talent Show, and the Spring Gala to name a few.
What is "a day in the life" like?
Each board member is expected to manage at least one event team and help out on a few other events. We have general meetings every few weeks, but most of the work is done in event teams. That said, the Activities Board has undergone a lot of changes over the last two years, so each new leadership team has the opportunity to shape the process.
Why did you join?
I ran for Activities Board because I wanted a role where I got to interact with many other members of the Sloan community. I had a blast during Orientation, but once core started, I wasn't able to see as many of my classmates in other Oceans because of our busy and varying schedules. I looked to the Activities Board as a way to plan events that would bring Sloanies together.
What is the best part of the position?
The day after a success event when everybody is talking about how much fun they had; that's the most rewarding part of the job. If you can get 300 MBA's to dress up in second-hand clothes and dance to 70's music for four hours, you obviously wield a lot of power on campus.
