Sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings, and students yelling at each other in incomprehensible foreign accents - yes, the 2006-2007 soccer season is well underway and the MIT Sloan soccer team is off to a great start.
The MIT Sloan Soccer Club experienced a surge of interest this year after a brilliant marketing campaign, which highlighted the team's newly recruited cheerleading squad, attracted over forty 1st year students to the annual 1st year vs. 2nd year soccer recruiting match. After the departure of our '06 teammates, the '07s were looking to the '08 class to help reinforce the aging squad. Carlos Araya '07 team co-captain, expressed concern that a few returning players on the team were showing signs of wear and tear after last year's demanding season and was quoted as saying; "there's more white hair on this team than on my grandfather's back."
Strategic recruiting and the team's new training regiment, BAP Fridays (Beers After Practice), must be making a difference as the team recently placed in 3rd place out of 16 teams at the Yale SOM Annual MBA Soccer Tournament. After five matches in two days, including wins over Yale Law, Columbia, Stern, and Carnegie Mellon, the team finally succumbed in a tough loss to Wharton in the semifinals.
The MIT Sloan team is currently undefeated and ranked an unprecedented 1st place in the competitive Boston Grad School Soccer League. Check http://mitsloansoccer.blogspot.com for news, stats, and schedules.
MIT Sloan Volleyball Dirty Dozen
Last month, MIT Sloan competed in the annual HBS Fall Classic Volleyball Tournament. Twelve teams from nine business schools (over 100 players) participated in the event and MIT Sloan fielded two strong teams of six players each. MIT Sloan had critical wins over Kellogg (last year's champions) and Wharton to go on to finish in 3rd and 5th place.
The MIT Sloan Volleyball Club meets regularly for pickup and practice and plans to compete in the Wharton Volleyball Tournament in the Spring. Contact Evan Schwartz '07 or Alex Barretto '07 if you're interested in joining the club.
