First semester is coming to a close, and most second years have their jobs lined up. Or do they?

Certainly, many second years do have job offers and a good many have decided on their first stop after MIT Sloan. Some signed their first offer with their dream job, and others have collected a stack of offers from which they will make a decision. Still, many in the Class of 2007 are very much in the midst of finding the perfect opportunity. Here's a cross-section of some of the 2nd year experiences in the game we like to call "The Great Job Hunt."

Laughing all the way to the bank

Mustally Hussain '07 spent his summer working for Citigroup Investment Banking in New York, where he rotated through a number of groups working on live deals and a few pitches. When asked to describe his experience Hussain said, "Most of you know that IBD has intense hours. That being said, there were times when I left the office at 10 PM." He enjoyed working with people at all levels, from analyst to Managing Director, and the expensive, yet expensed, firm happy hours. Like many of the banking interns who have accepted offers with their summer employers, Mustally has accepted a full-time offer with Citigroup and is not interviewing for jobs this year.

To be a consultant…

Jeff Haxer '07 interned for Textron's strategy group in Providence, where he considered potential mergers & acquisitions in aerospace and defense. Wanting to return back to his pre-MBA industry, Haxer interviewed for positions with a few management consulting firms. He is now weighing a number of options, and will not be interviewing in the Spring.

…or not

Consulting is an interesting option to those without prior experience in the field as well. At McKinsey's BTO in Moscow, Andrey Titov '07 worked on two projects this summer - designing IT architecture for a top Russian bank and creating a long-term forecast of the Russian electricity market. "Although consulting is an interesting career path, I found it more attractive to go back to the high tech sector." Titov plans to have his job search completed this Fall, as he's not sure he'll be able to push himself to "do something next semester after two months of G-Lab and vacation."

Options and more options

Christine Yick '07 worked for Google this summer in its AdWords group. While she enjoyed her summer experience, once recruiting started she realized that there are numerous opportunities available and has been interviewing this Fall. However, as many of the firms Yick is interested in won't have positions open for a while, she fully expects to continue her job search into the Spring.

Waiting for the Spring

While her classmates have been stressing out for the past few months, Erica Vogelei '07 is taking a different approach. She does not plan to start her job search in earnest until February. "That said, I am doing a lot of research now and starting to reach out to some companies on my own. I think most of my job search will take place outside the CDO."
