The South End is a restaurant mecca. There are so many wonderful options and it seems as though every day, there is another place opening up to glowing reviews. Stella Restaurant and Bar is an Italian restaurant located on Washington Street that holds its own among the stars in this area of Boston.

When you enter Stella, you'll notice the chic bar off to the right. There, hip fashionistas sip their martinis and nibble on the bar menu nosh. The late night dining appears to be a favorite with the locals. At the entrance, a lovely hostess welcomes you and guides you to the maitre de stand. We arrived on a Saturday night without any reservations, which is always a bad idea, but the maitre de graciously offered us a table without any wait.

In addition to the bar area, there are two dining rooms at Stella. The atmosphere can be described as clean (there is a lot of white), warm and contemporary, with a multi-textured décor that includes layers from the granite tabletops to the fabric-tile floor. The candlelight and dim lighting result in a romantic setting.

The chef, Evan Deluty, first rose to fame at Beacon Hill's Torch. He keeps up his fabulous cooking at Stella, which can be best described as fresh and simple. The dinner menu has a great mix of reasonably priced antipasti, thin crust pizzas, pastas and entrees. The best part is that all of their signature drinks are $8. This is absolutely unheard of in any swanky Boston restaurant. We started off our dinner with a couple of cocktails: a mojito and a dark n' stormy. Both were perfectly mixed and we made a mental note to thank Jen, one of the bartenders, on the way out. For our meal, we ordered an appetizer special, the beef tartare ($12), and grilled Italian sausages ($10), and for entrees, homemade gnocchi ($19) and the roasted half chicken ($19).
