Sarah O'Brien MBA '09
After spending an afternoon at the adMIT weekend a couple of weeks ago somebody asked me, “what do the adMITs look like”? “They look just like we did a year ago”, I replied. And they do. The soon to be class of 2010 walked around campus exuding the same mix of nervous excitement and enthusiasm that we did when we first set foot on the ground outside E51.
Now after a year of classes, club activities, conferences, treks and IAP, we, the class of 2009, no longer bear the look of uncertainty. For we have become the school leaders; the experienced and the knowledgeable. But how can that be? It seems like only yesterday when I was sitting in the Wong Auditorium taking the pre-term classes with nervous sweat trickling down my neck at the thought of the inconsequential amount of math I had studied since high school and what lay ahead. Yet somehow already here we are, halfway through our MBA experience about to embark on our summer internships and bidding the second years adieu.
And with that thought I realized something. We are in the middle of a perpetual cycle, a moment in our lives that will become the same moment for many others for many years to come; the adMITs will keep arriving and the second years will depart. I don’t know much about cycles (I’m yet to take system dynamics) other than that they have no beginning and no end, they simply continue. I feel confident that sound infrastructure exists for MIT Sloan to continue its cycle. That long after we have gone, the new students will still be learning the forces of supply and demand, the net present value and the voice of the customer. Perhaps they will even be our children or our children’s children. But for now, the reality is that these two years are but a small, fortunate moment in our lives. And with one down and one to go, I look forward to making the most of the time we have left.
And so as the second years prepare to return to the ‘real-world’ and begin the rest-of-their-lives, we would like to thank them for their leadership, friendship, support and advice. We wish them success and happiness in their endeavors. We would also like to wish the class of 2009 a safe and enjoyable summer. We look forward to hearing your stories when we return in the Fall and to welcoming the class of 2010 to Sloan.
