One of the irritating aspects of moving to a new city is wading through all the low quality bakeries before finding the gems. You ask people for recommendations, you read reviews, and most of them are written by people without an ounce of discernment. If you are nodding at this point and sadly remembering a disappointing episode at say, Carberry's, please give me a call.

In an effort to prevent massive crowding at some of the absolute best spots, this article will not give away all my secrets. But, if you really want to know and you're willing to make it worth my while, you know where to find me. In the meantime, hopefully this brief guide will help you avoid a few unfortunate wasted calories and dollars.

Best Doughnuts: Verna's
Verna's opens at 5:30 am most days. The next time someone needs a ride to the airport at 6am, volunteer as the earlier you can get there, the better. The coconut doughnut is remarkable and you won't find a better Boston Cream. The variety they have for sale is significant, so if a slightly hefty kid is working behind the counter when you go, ask him for a recommendation. Take it. This kid knows his stuff. The coffee isn't great, but everything is super cheap. They also sell a wide variety of other bakery items but I can't review these as I always get doughnuts and there is no reason to branch out with doughnuts that good. If you try something else, let me know how it is.

Best Cupcakes: Kickass Cupcakes
Kickass lives up to its name. The mojito cupcake is a rum-laced yellow cake with a mint/lime buttercream frosting and a bit of fresh mint on top. They have special flavors every day-both exotic and the basic chocolate/vanilla combos. On my last visit, a father politely allowed me to go ahead of him in line because his two daughters were absolutely unable to make up their minds. I would recommend you buy no more than two cupcakes per person and then leave the store before things get out of hand. Thank goodness we are adults and can eat as many cupcakes as we want.
